The Spanish Golden Age — 1492

Las Meninas (“Ladies in Waiting”) [Pronounced “las meh nee’nas”] by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age. Painting dates from 1656, and now hangs in Museo del Prado in Madrid. The Spanish Golden Age was a period of flourishing in Spanish art and literature. It began in 1492 when Columbus sailed to the New World and lasted about a century.
