When the police in Dallas could not get Dallas sniper/cop killer Micah Johnson to surrender from the building is which he was hiding they sent in a bomb-laden robot. Then they remotely detonated the robotic bomb and that was the end of the stand off. Micah Johnson was blown to pieces.
This is controversial, of course. I have no problem with it because I consider that when Micah Johnson begain shooting police officers in the back from a sniper position he voluntarily forfeited all of his natural rights as a human being, inlcuding the right to life. From that point on killing him was what needed to be done, by any means necessary.
That is not the end of the story, however. The rest of the story is to consider what this sort of action might mean for the future. If it is restricted to dangerous terrorists like Micah Johnson we needn’t worry. But human nature has not changed much in the last 10,000 years. During most of that time the difference between the 1% and 99% was that the 1% had all the power and the 99% were serfs. The king and his lords lived in luxury and the 99% toiled in the fields.
The balance of power between the lords and serfs changed in about 1400 with the invention of gun powder. Just as 9mm pistol today makes it possible for a 100 pound women to fend off a 200 pound attacker, the Age of the Gun which began about 700 years ago and continues to the present meant that the serfs could, if the need arose, defend themselves against the monopoly on violence and power previously held by the 1%.
The king had well paid and loyal warriors who had spent the entire lives learning the art of warfare. This advantage was lost when, like the 100 pound female today, the serfs gained the ability and the means to fight back.
The ruling class today worries that the 99% can’t be trusted with guns. That’s why in their heart of hearts they would really like to confiscate them all. At present there are many roadblocks in the way of doing that. The sheer number of guns in the hands of ordinary people is a huge problem for the gun grabbing ruling class. Another is the simple fact that it is only about 1% or less of the 99% that can’t be trusted with guns, and the rest of the 99% who peacefully possess guns aren’t going to peacefully give them up. But it is the 99% that should be concerned. A 9mm pistol or an AK-47 is not of much use against robotic bombs.
Here is an interesting and somewhat frightening article that further explores this subject: Drones will cause an upheaval of society like we haven’t seen in 700 years.
