Illegal Immigrants From Mexico Running a $4 Billion Scam on the IRS

The child tax credit is worth up to $1,000 per child under the age of 17. There are numerous requirements to be met before one is eligible to claim the credit, but if one claims the credit and claims to have met all the requirements it would take an audit by the IRS to discover the facts. The child tax credit is a “refundable credit,” meaning if one claims more in credits than one’s income tax liability, the remainder is refunded directly to the taxpayer in the form of a check from the IRS. This has created an opportunity for cheating and getting money right away from the government. It appears that many illegal immigrants have discovered this ticket to easy money and are filing fraudulent returns claiming the child tax credit for children they don’t have, or even children living in Mexico.

Channel 13 WTHR in Indianapolis has done an investigative report and discovered that over $4 Billion dollars a year is being ripped off from American taxpayers through the child tax credit scam by illegal immigrants.

The $1,000 per child tax credit expires at the end of 2012 and reverts back to $500 per child, unless Congress extends the “additional credit.” Does anyone suppose Congress with do anything to stop the abuse of the child tax credit? Democrats and even some Republicans see these illegals as voters, so I wouldn’t bet on it.

H/T to my neighbor Mary Jane for pointing me to this story.
