How To Escape the Cult of Climate Change

The earth’s climate is always changing. We humans don’t cause it nor can we stop it. In the past millions of years earth has been warmer that it is now, and it has been much colder than it is presently.

Earth in the past has been covered by sheets of ice a mile thick. A few Stone-Age humans lived in those places. Now the ice is gone everywhere except the North Pole and Antarctica. North America was once covered with one-mile-thick ice over an area spreading out from what is now Chicago.

The ice formed about 2.6 million years ago and lasted until about 11,700 years ago. Many other such ice sheets existed all around the planet.

There have been at least five documented major ice ages during the 4.6 billion years since the Earth was formed — and most likely many more before humans came on the scene about 2.3 million years ago.

That humans managed to eke out an existence under such conditions is a testament to human ingenuity and endurance. We’re tough animals, we don’t scare easy. Well, at least those distant ancestors didn’t. They had few to none of the resources we have, but they had grit.

Huge changes in earth’s climate have occurred without regard to humans. Knowing that earth’s climate has been free to change drastically without human control, why do so many people now believe we can stop it from changing? Maybe it’s not so many but the true believers make it seem so by the fuss they make every time someone has the audacity to question their outlandish claims.

Alexander O’Crazy Cortez says we are doomed in 12 years if we don’t get control of climate change. Right away a normal person’s BS detector will raise a warning not to drink her Kool-Aid. While the last ice age stayed around 2.6 million years before it began to melt, it took at least a thousand or more years for it’s glaciers to disappear. While the climate has always changed and will continue, it doesn’t happen within human time. It happens in several generations of humans and often only in geologic time.

AOC’s 12-year scare should convince any person of reasonable intelligence that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Human caused climate change is a doctrine based in cult, not science. No significant change in earth’s climate will occur in just 12 years.

There have been two significant changes in earth’s climate in the past 1200 years. The change was slow enough that few noticed while it was happening. The first was the medieval warm period from about 900 A.D. to 1300 A.D. The warming ended the Dark Ages which began with the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D. and lasted till around 800 A.D. The warming that followed was beneficial to animal and plant life. Its effects were evident in Europe where grain crops flourished, alpine tree lines rose, and new cities were built. The warm period encouraged human migration around the globe and gave rise to the Renaissance in Europe. The Vikings played a role in world migration during the warm period by conguering Denmark, Greenland and parts of England.

As the world turned the warm period gave way to a cooler chapter now called the Little Ice Age lasting from about A.D. 1500-1850. The Little Ice Age had an effect opposite that of the medieval warm period.   Crop yields suffered and this had, as expected, an adverse effect on civilizational harmony. See, e.g., The Little Ice Age and The French Revolution.

What caused these climate changes? Exact causes haven’t been determined but we know that changes in ocean currents, the composition of the atmosphere, and changes in the position of the Earth in relation to the sun are key contributors to climate change.

The current hoopla and hysteria over so-called man-made climate change adds nothing to our continued understanding of the earth we live on. The one thing it does add is the need for a new chapter in Charles Mackay’s book, Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, first published in 1841. It remains in print  to this day because, I suppose, extraordinary popular delusions continue to exist.

Stone cold proof that human-caused climate change is little more that a dangerous cult (all cults are dangerous, especially to those who fall prey to them) can be found in this seminal piece: Climate Change and the Ten Warning Signs For Cults.
