Hillary Clinton will get us into stupid wars

Robert Mann, Smithsonian Magazine April 13, 2016:

On September 7, 1964, a 60-second TV ad changed American politics forever. A 3-year-old girl in a simple dress counted as she plucked daisy petals in a sun-dappled field. Her words were supplanted by a mission-control countdown followed by a massive nuclear blast in a classic mushroom shape. The message was clear if only implicit: Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater was a genocidal maniac who threatened the world’s future. Two months later, President Lyndon Johnson won easily, and the emotional political attack ad—visceral, terrifying, and risky—was made [into a staple of American politics to this day].

Here is the “daisy girl” ad from 1964:

The ad ran only once and did not even mention Barry Goldwater by name. Nevermind, everyone knew it referred to Goldwater and the message was that Goldwater was a war-mongering maniac who would get us into a nasty and dangerous war. The ad’s message that Lyndon Johnson was the safer choice for America. LBJ easily won and proceeded to get America into the Vietnam war in which 538,000 American troops were deployed at the peak, 58,000 of them killed and twice that many severly injured. Thousands more were mentally scared. The side effect of that 13-year war was political upheaval at home and an ignominious withdrawal 7 years after LBJ left office.

Had Goldwater been elected he could not possibly have done worse.

The Hillary campaign has ressurected the theme of the daisy girl ad and is trying to make us believe that Donald Trump will get us into stupid wars. Actually, it’s Hillary that is more likely to get us into stupid wars, such as those already burning under the policies of Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The conflagration in Syria and the failed war in Libya are examples of the sort of foreign policy that will get America into more stupid wars under a Hillary Clinton presidency.
