I have a friend and fellow motorcycle enthusiast who used to also be a passionate glider pilot. He said he quit sail planes after attending too many funerals of his glider buddies.
This glider guy had a close call. Luckily, his funeral has been delayed indefinitely.
The pilot later said this mishap was due to his lingering on the lee-side of a ridge over rough terrain, something his training, had he followed it, would have prevented. He’ll be more careful in future.
I wonder if the main way we become safe at dangerous sports is to survive close calls like this. It sure gets our attention.
