Don’t get excited over that misleading email going around about the U.N Small Arms Treaty

The email to which I refer starts this way:

On Wednesday Obama Took the First Major Step in a Plan to Ban All Firearms in the United States

Gun owners don’t need to worry about this — yet.

First, there is nothing for Obama to sign at this time and may not be by July 27th.

Second, his signature on a proposed international treaty does not put it into force — it must first be ratified in the Senate by a 2/3 majority vote [U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 2, clause 2]. Only senators looking for a one-way ticket home will vote to ratify it.  Even if all Democrats in the Senate supported it they don’t have a 2/3 majority, and lots of Democrats are opposed to it will not vote to ratify it.  At least one-half of Democrats in the Senate will not support it, and a majority of Republicans will not.  Admittedly, a few of the RINO nimrods might, i.e. Snowe and Collins.

Third, this treaty is not the one that applies to citizens within a country, it is a proposed restriction only on military weapons.  That means it may not even pass in the UN because the dictators and tyrants that make up the bulk of United Nations countries governments don’t want any restrictions on themselves, only on their citizens.

Fourth, Obama may not be as smart as some say, in fact he may be pretty dumb.  But he’s probably not dumb enough to sign any UN treaty having to do with small arms when he’s trying to get re-elected.  Gun owners should probably wish he does sign it, if and when the UN produces something he can sign.

So relax.  Save your energy for the important stuff, such as the prospect of 4 more years of Obama. That’s something to worry about.

UPDATE:  This is not to say that the U.N. is not a threat to Americans’ gun rights, it certainly is and that is even more true with Obama as President and Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.  We know that liberal statists such as Obama and Clinton are cosy with tyrants and dictators such as Castro, Chaves, the Muslim Brotherhood, and just about all the tyrannical regimes in the Middle East.  The New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman writes glowingly about how easy it is for the Chinese Communist regime to pass new laws and how nice it would be if Obama could rule with the same iron hand.  Liberal-statist types can barely hide their sycophant admiration for dictators for one reason:  They are in deep envy of the power a Fidel Castro can wield over the inhabitants of his island prison.  They will jump at the chance to use an international treaty to overturn our Second Amendment, if they can get away with it.

Their dictator friends want as much control over their citizens as they can get because dictators are always and everywhere in danger of being deposed and killed in a popular revolt.  The human spirit always yearns to be free.
