Did Rick Santorum Jump the Shark Today?

Santorum doesn’t actually say it, but everyone seems to be interpreting what he says in this video as meaning he thinks Obama would be better than Romney. I interpret his remarks as saying that Romney does not offer enough of a contrast to Obama, and that will make it harder to defeat Obama.

I’m no Romney fan but if he is the Republican nominee I will absolutely vote for him. In fact his victory speech in Illinois was great. The words were sweet music to the ears of conservatives, it’s just that with Romney you always have a lingering question as to whether he believes what he is saying. You wonder who wrote it for him because it doesn’t seem plausible that he was speaking from the heart or we would have heard this stuff before. When you know how different his past actions have been from what he is saying now you have to think either he’s had a road to Damascus conversion or he’s just telling you what he thinks you want to hear. You’d like to believe the former but you also know that political reality eventually trumps wishful thinking.

Santorum hurt himself today, and it may have been fatal. No way Obama is preferable to Romney even if Romney is the hollow man I think he is. Santorum may be misunderstood here, but it’s his responsibility to use the right words because Words count in a presidential primary campaign. Santorum was careless with his words today.
