The combined wisdom of Margaret Thatcher and Robert Conquest

Margaret Thatcher:

“If you create a government bureaucracy in order to deal with a problem you’ll never be rid of the problem.”

Example: U.S. Department of Education was created by Jimma Carter in 1979 with the official mission is promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence.  Public schools in America have declined steadily since and now turn out high school graduates with barely a 3rd grade reading level.  American school children consistently score lower on tests to measure basic skills in reading and arithmetic than children from Asia and Europe.  Thatcher didn’t say the problem would likely get worse, but I’m pretty sure she would not be surprised.

Robert Conquest:

Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.

Examples: Every mainstream protestant church in America once focused exclusively on religious teaching and fellowship but now worships liberalism over all else. The Ford Foundation and others like it have become rapidly left-wing and anti-Semitic in their hatred of Israel.

The simplest way to explain the behavior of any bureaucratic organization is to assume that it is controlled by a cabal of its enemies.

Shining Example: Department of Homeland Security, created because 19 Muslims flew planes into skyscrapers and killed 3,000 people. Now 13 years later head of the DHS Jeh Johnson thinks his department’s priority should be to “give voice to the plight of Muslims” who have the misfortune to live in America.  It never dawns on him that as easily as they came here they could leave if they wanted to. It never occurs to him what the plight of Muslims living in Muslim countries might be, such as when a woman is raped it is she who is deemed to be at fault and may be punished severely, even beheaded, while the male rapist remains free and in good standing. Johnson apparently has no concerns about the teenage girls who suffer “honor killings” at the hands of their fathers and/or brothers, or the millions of women who are denied basic respect and freedom in a male dominated misogynistic culture.  The “plight of Muslims” living in America has nothing to do with America and everything to do with their own culture.
