Colorado legislator says self defense is “absurd”

Nobody needs to be told that she’s a Democrat from Boulder.

When I first learned that self defense was actually illegal in the UK, I thought I was being lied to. It didn’t seem possible that any human of normal intelligence could think no one has a right to defend their own life. I knew lots of people who were anti-gun and suspected something was wrong with them but it didn’t occur to me that a dread of anyone acting to defend themselves from lethal attack was involved. Nobody is that fucked up, I told myself. After all, every living thing on this earth wants to continue living and will do whatever it takes to avoid injury to itself and to preserve its own life. I have now come to realize that yes, there are people, more than a few it turns out, who are that demented. Ms. Hullinghorst is one of them.

There’s an 11-minute Youtube video of a Tim Caffrey interview of Hullinghorst spewing nonsense as if out of a firehose. I tried to watch and couldn’t get past about 3 minutes so I’m not posting it since I doubt any reader here could stand it either. The main points of what she thinks and says:

From the Colorado Peak Politics:

But near the end of the interview, Hullinghorst lets her guard down and says, “The thought that the only way we can protect ourselves is to wield our own weapon is completely absurd and an argument that I absolutely discount as frivolous.”

Hullinghorst believes that the only defense is “law and order.” That people will not commit crimes simply because there are laws against criminal activity. According to Colorado Democrats, women should leave their guns at home and the next time a woman is threatened with rape, she should simply remind her assailant that his activity is actually against the law. Or, when an intruder enters your home, yell out, “You’re trespassing!”

Right.  If attacked just remind your attacker that his actions are against the law.  No serious person, no sane person, could think these thoughts or say these things. This is the sort of nitwit who gets elected to a legislative position by voters who operate on emotion alone because they can’t be bothered to think about why they are voting for a candidate.

Some insight into the mental condition of the Dickey Hullinghorsts of the world can be found in this paper: Raging against self defense: A psychiatrist examines the anti-gun mentality by Sarah Thompson.

Doctor Thompson finds that anti-gunners are using exaggerated and unhealthy forms of various common defense mechanisms, and finds a common thread:

In my experience, the common thread in anti-gun people is rage. Either anti-gun people harbor more rage than others, or they’re less able to cope with it appropriately. Because they can’t handle their own feelings of rage, they are forced to use defense mechanisms in an unhealthy manner. Because they wrongly perceive others as seeking to harm them, they advocate the disarmament of ordinary people who have no desire to harm anyone. So why do anti-gun people have so much rage and why are they unable to deal with it in appropriate ways? Consider for a moment that the largest and most hysterical anti-gun groups include disproportionately large numbers of women, African- Americans and Jews. And virtually all of the organizations that claim to speak for these “oppressed people” are stridently anti-gun. Not coincidentally, among Jews, Blacks and women there are many “professional victims” who have little sense of identity outside of their victimhood.
