After traveling in Israel in 2002 I was surprised to find so many Jews in America who have no devotion or even respect for Israel. Jews who would not feel a loss if Israel were destroyed tomorrow. It made no sense to me until I realized that these American Jews have not just erased Israel from their list of things they care about, but seemingly Judaism as well. They have adopted a new religion in left-wing liberalism.
American liberalism is the rock solid center of anti-semitism in America. Why would any Jew in America embrace that bigotry? Why would any Jew in the world want to identify with such people? It must be true that leftist liberalism is indeed a mental disease. It’s as if American Jewry has something akin to Stockholm Syndrome. Anti-Semitism is rising. Why aren’t American Jews speaking up? Because they’re (gasp?) anti-Semitic too?
Barack Obama was the president most hostile to Israel and its Jewish population. No other president comes close to Jew hatred as did Obama. Yet American Jews helped him get elected twice. American Jews are trying to make friends with their enemies, which might be noble were it not for the fact that their enemies hate them and will never cease being their enemies.
American Jews seem to think that if they hate the same people their enemies hate then their enemies will like them. This is so nonsensical because the friends they are trying to make are not worthy of them. Jew hating liberals are never going to be the sort of people Jews should want to have as friends. At least not if Judaism still matters to them.
Judaism and Christianity gave Judeo-Christian values to the world and those values led to the greatest advance of human civilization the world has ever known. The American Jewish left is spitting in the face of their own religion.
Some are fighting back.
But there is an alternative.
A new generation of traditionalist Jews, proud of their heritage and jealous to preserve it, is unimpressed with America’s broken Judaism. These Jews know that their ancestors did not live to worship a political party nor die for faddish causes.
They recognize that the American Jewish future depends on overcoming the superficial and ignorant equation of Judaism with leftist politics. What is needed is a real Jewish renewal — a community that stands for religious liberty, not against it; affirms the alliance between America and Israel, rather than undermines it; and above all believes it is a community that has a compelling reason to persist.
It’s time for American Jewry to repair itself.
