Obamacare Architect Jonathan Gruber: We Lied and Counted on the Stupidity of the American People

MIT economics professor Jonathan Gruber is the architect of Obamacare. He also wrote Romneycare. He is a professor at MIT, a professor of economics.

The 54-second video video below is of some remarks he made in October, 2013 about Obamacare and the sneaky way in which it was written and foisted upon the American people. He was in Philadelphia speaking at the 24th Annual Health Economics Conference. He reveals here the underhanded things they did to get it enacted into law.

Here is a partial transcript:

This bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies, okay? So it’s written to do that. In terms of risk-rated subsidies, if you had a law which said healthy people are gonna pay in… If you made it explicit the healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed, okay? Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, you know, call it the stupidity of American voter or whatever. But basically that was really, really critical to getting the thing to pass.

They wrote the bill so that the CBO would not score the mandate as a tax because that would have put its cost at over $1 Trillion, the magic number Obama used to sell it on the basis that it would not cost any more than the Iraq war had cost. A few Democrats in Congress had signaled they would not vote for it if its cost exceeded that amount. Then when the mandate was challenged in court as Unconstitutional they argued to the Supreme Court that the mandate was really a tax and not a mandate. Chief Justice Roberts, to his everlasting shame, came to their rescue and called the mandate a tax.

This fraudulent scheme to fool the American people and a few skeptical Congressmen is now being hailed as political brilliance.
