You can use fishing leader ir thin line, dental floss or heavy duty thread among other things.

Those things would sure be easier to find when you want them. Most people probably don’t keep oxygen mask straps in their medicine cabinet. But I think it’s the elasticity of the OGM strap that makes it easier to use for this.

It can but I used this in the ER 30 yrs ago with string or suture. As you wrap the finger firmly you still get the compressive milking of tissue fluids up the finger and a decrease in finger diameter distal to the ring. If you have the elastic strap great but as you pointed out all the other stuff works. If you have a snug ring that you can remove it is a good thing to practice this technique

The whole idea of having a ring stuck on my finger is so awful I think that must be why I don’t wear a ring. I think I did have one stuck many moons ago and it was painful getting it off so I swore off rings. I’ll remember this method in case I ever have to get one off someone else.

Once in the ER we were presented with a guy who had left on a business trip and his lovely newlywed wife in a act of affection put her ring on him. We saw him before he even got out of town with a very very swollen and painful penis! Yep that is where she put it. That one required more than the string trick.
