Todd Akin Staying in Missouri Senate Race

UPDATE 8/23: Claire McCaskill up 10 points over Todd Akin in Rasmussen poll.  Previously, McCaskill was trailing Akin by 10 points. Nine percent are for someone else, 5% undecided.

UPDATE 8/22:  Democrats are delusional if they turn their convention into an anti-Akin campaign and engage in ceaseless talk about abortion.  Republicans should hope they do.

Todd Akin Tells Dana Loesch on her radio show he’s staying in the Missouri Senate race. That will please Claire McCaskill.

Gateway Pundit found the appropriate Biblical scripture:
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
–Proverbs 16:18

Here is what Akin said on one of the Sunday Morning shows, explaining why he is opposed to abortion even in the case of rape:

“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Mr. Akin said of pregnancies from rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

Not only were his remarks stupid, boorish and primitive, they reveal a stance on abortion that is too far out of the Republican mainstream as to make him an viable candidate for either the establishment wing or the Tea Party wing of the party.  While a majority of voters across the board favor some restrictions on abortion, only a tiny minority favor restrictions in the case of rape.  Add these remarks and Todd Akin becomes unelectable, and his staying in is quite a selfish and self-defeating act.

  1. Personally I abhor the social conservatism/extremism of many Republicans. I totally agree with your last sentence – the voters deserve a better candidate. Why should one have to hold his nose to vote Republican?

    • That’s what so great about the Tea Party. Their issues are limited government, fiscal responsibility, federalism, and individual liberty. They take no position on social issues because their members are diverse and would not agree on them.
